Beyond Access Programs
Tutoring Plus
What is the Tutoring Plus Program?
Tutoring Plus is more than content tutoring. The Tutoring Plus program is designed to support application of study skills and learning strategies to specific course content. Students learn college level skills and competencies for reading, writing, and problem solving to complete assignments, projects, presentations and exam preparation in enrolled courses.
Qualified peer tutors provide content tutoring which is integrated with strategy instruction. Strategy Instructors conduct “in-the-moment” check-ins to reinforce learning strategies, and self-awareness skills applicable to the course content in which the student is being tutored. Peer tutors complete an online tutoring module for working with students with disabilities. Tutors provide content clarification as well as demonstrate ways to master and retain content knowledge. Students learn tips and techniques for understanding course assignments, interpreting class notes, comprehending required readings, and preparing for quizzes and exams.
Tutoring Plus sessions are offered weekly. Each session is one hour in length. Students meet with the same tutor each week. Tutoring Plus sessions continue through the semester, except during semester break, until the week of final exams.
Goals of the Program
The Tutoring Plus program is designed to provide:
- Clarification of course content.
- Guided and independent practice in applying strategies to specific content areas of learning.
