Preparation Rights & Responsibilities Empowerment Planning

Please join us at the University of Connecticut for a six day, transition focused summer program. Participate in academic and personal skills training sessions and enjoy living, learning and socializing on a college campus.

Who Image

Three specialized tracks available!

UCPrep Image
Track 1 is for rising high school juniors
and seniors
Track 2 is for entering college freshmen in
2012
Track 3 is for students with Autism
Spectrum Disorders
  • Applicants must be able to demonstrate competencies necessary for college success.
  • Applicants must have a high school GPA of at least 2.5.
  • Applicants must complete and submit a UCPREP application (and include an official HS transcript). For early bird registration, applications must be received by May 5, 2012. The application deadline for UCPREP is June 15, 2012.
  • Applicants must submit an IEP, 504 plan or other documentation which discusses the nature of their disability.
  • Applicants must provide a recommendation letter from a high school teacher or school counselor which attests to their qualifications to participate in UCPREP and overall college readiness.
  • Applicants must be able to live on the UConn campus and participate as expected in all program activities for the duration of the program.

  • Acquire a broader knowledge of college life, expectations and responsibilities.
  • Gain a better understanding of your academic and personal strengths and needs.
  • Understand your rights and responsibilities as a student with a disability.
  • Learn the skills to become an effective self-advocate.
  • Create an individualized college transition plan that will assist with planning, preparation and adjustment.

Activities May Include:


Preparation Arrow
  • Participating in a college lecture
  • Learning about campus resources and support services
  • Living in a college residence hall and dining on campus
  • Socializing with other students and enjoying off campus outings with peers

Rights and Responsibilities Arrow
  • Understanding your rights and responsibilities as a student with a disability
  • Participating in a college game show that highlights the differences between high school and college

Empowerment Arrow
  • Discovering more about personal strengths and learning styles
  • Reinforcing self-advocacy skills
  • Learning how to communicate effectively with students, staff and faculty members
  • Using problem solving and social skills to work with others to complete a Challenge Course

Planning Arrow
  • Acquiring new study and organizational skills
  • Touring a University Library and being introduced to research strategies
  • Learning useful tools and technologies that can assist you with college level work
  • Creating transition goals to assist with the adjustment to college level demands and expectations
